Marisela Echeverria,36, of Cypress Creek, CA was on a 80 mile training ride in preparation for the upcoming Ironman Arizona when she was tragically crushed by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus Saturday afternoon.
The police report states, "the woman lost control of her bicycle after some trucks passed her, and her handlebar hit a parked vehicle." A Los Angeles County Sheriff official said she was then was dragged beneath the bus and ultimately run over and crushed by its rear wheels. A prior death in Echeverria's family altered her original Ironman plans.
Echeveria was planning to race the recent Ironman Canada, however, her father passed away the night before the triathlon and she skipped Ironman Canada. "We chose Ironman Arizona to be the race that she honored herself and her father," said her coach Brad Hall.
